Tortilla chips, an absolute delicacy, are made from corn tortillas, cut into triangles, and then fried or baked. Tortilla chips always come to the rescue when guests visit your place without notice. All you need is corn tortillas, oil, and salt to make the fresh, crunchy, golden, tortilla chips.

The triangular-shaped tortilla chips were popularized in the year 1940 at El Zarape Tortilla Factory in Los Angeles.

Rebecca Webb Carranza and her husband manufactured corn tortillas through automated machines at their factory. Carranza thought to make use of the mishappen tortilla that was rejected from the automated machine. She cut the tortillas in a triangular shape and sold them for a dime per bag.

Tortilla Chips Recipe

You can prepare tortilla chips mainly in two ways, baking, and frying. You can experience the flavor of oil when you fry them but when you decide to be on the healthier side you can bake them.

It is obvious that chips that are fried in oil taste the best but calorie checkers can go for the baked ones.

Fried Tortilla Chips

Cut the tortilla into 6 triangular shape wedges. For best results use extra thin tortillas because they fry up the crispiest.

Pour the oil into a pan and heat the pan.
Note: The oil will heat up first so, don’t leave the oil unattended.

Now cook the tortilla wedges in batches. You might cook 8 – 10 tortilla wedges in a single batch.

Cook the tortilla for nearly 2 min until their color changes to a golden brown. The chips are thin and will cook fast. Don’t cook for long as it will burn the chips and make them brown.

Once fried, remove the tortilla chips on a paper towel to remove the excess oil from the chips.

Seasoning with salt should be done immediately after placing the chips on the paper towel, else the salt wouldn’t stick on the chips.

Now it is all set to enjoy your crispy, homemade tortilla chips.

Baked Tortilla Chips

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Cut the tortillas into 6 triangular wedges.

Arrange the tortilla wedges on the baking sheet in a single layer.

In another prepare a mixture of oil and lime juice and spread it over the tortilla chips arranged on the baking sheet. You can do this either by brushing or spraying

Bake the tortilla chips for 6 – 7 minutes, then turn the wedges over.

Now spread a little salt and bake again for 8 minutes until the chips turn golden and crisp. Make sure the chips don’t turn brown.

Serve the chips with salsa or guacamole.
